Echuca is located north of Melbourne near the New South Wales border. Echuca was surveyed in 1854 and quickly became one of Australia's busiest inland ports, with paddle steamers ferrying supplies throughout Australia's interior via the river network. The heyday of paddle steamers and river trade has left a historic legacy to Echuca on which much of its tourism is built upon today.

Today the Historic Port of Echuca precinct is home to Australia's largest fleet of authentic paddle steamers, on the banks of the mighty Murray River lie historic river port towns which offer wine, jazz, fishing, boating or simply lazing and, the Barmah State Forest where ancient Red River Gums dip their leaves. A visit to Echuca in not complete without a tour on the river onboard one of the original paddle steamers.
