Forbes is located in central New South Wales only 386km outside Sydney or 28km South of Parkes. Within ten years of the first gold strike, Forbes, named after Sir Francis Forbes, a chief justice of New South Wales was proclaimed a Municipality in 1870. By the time the town had reached Municipal and shire status, gold had become secondary to the agriculture and pastoral wealth of the district. The town had started to build the pattern of settlement of today with those who prospered building fine homes on what was recognised as the pick of residential areas of town.

Today this town is still very proud of our fine historic buildings, many of which retain their original appearance. Built mostly in the late 1800s, they speak of the vision and confidence in an era of unfolding promise. There is a lot of history in this town showing the Aussie spirit and overcoming the hardship of the outback in the early 19th century.
