In 1877 a Bump Track was carved down to the coast from the Hodgkinson River and Port Douglas was quickly settled by merchants, this was due to the discovery of gold in 1876. In 1877 the town was named after the current Premier of Queensland, John Douglas by visiting Colonial Treasurer and Queensland Parliamentarian.

Port Douglas in located only an hours drive north of Cairns on the East coast of Queensland.
