Proserpine is located in Northern Queensland approximately 126km north of Mackay or 25km from Airlie Beach. The explorer George Dalrymple, passed through the area in the mid 1859's heading north, he named the entire area Proserpina (the Roman name for the Greek goddess of fertility), Persephone. The first settled Europeans weren't until 1861 and shortly there after the Proserpine sugar mill opened, and in 1931 the mill became a co-operative and is now recognised as one of the most modern sugar mills in the world.

Today Proserpine is the administrative hub for the Whitsunday Shire and the anchor for the Whitsundays region providing some key infrastructure including the rail station, the mainland airport, high school, the hospital and other vital services.
