The Rockhampton Airport is located just on the edge of the city of Rockhampton, which is in Northern Queensland only 706km north of the capital of the State Brisbane. The Rockhampton Airport was officially opened as Connor Park Aerodrome on March 2, 1930 and a few weeks later the aerodrome was again officially opened as Rockhampton Aerodrome. The first passenger aircraft, a Fokker monoplane, Star of Cairns, landed and from this point on the Airport has ever been without passengers passing though it's doors. Rockhampton township was founded in 1855, soon after the pioneering Archer Brothers settled at Gracemere, 6.5 km to the west. It was named by Queensland's first Land Commissioner, Mr W. Wiseman, who was inspired by the rocks in the river. Today the region's major mining activity produces coal from the nearby Bowen Basin for the world?s steel-making plants and for power production. It is also known for it's beef wiith more than two million head of cattle in the region.
Rockhampton is one of Queenslands many tourist stops, offering some wonderful colonial architecture along the historic Quay Street. Approximately 100,000 international tourists, and one million domestic tourists visit the Rockhampton district each year. Due to the regions rich history and hertitage it will always continue to attract interest, there is everything here from the architecture, gem fields, limestone caves, the botanic gardens and zoo.
